Wireless Woes

Buizel Unimpressed
I've got my Thinkpad back today after sending it to IBM to get it fixed. I'm always impressed by IBM's repair turnaround time.

In the time between breaking Thinky and getting it back, I caved and purchased a MacBook (which will be henceforth known as "Maccy"). It came with a free iPod Nano too! :D It's really nice, and it's a lot faster than Thinky, but I think I'll still hang on to the IBM until I'm done with school. A bunch of the programs I use in engineering seem to work best on PCs, not to mention Thinky can run OC, Hello, and various other programs I don't want to have to buy. However, I plan on making Maccy my main computer once I've transferred my documents, pics, and music.

My problem is now my router. My parents got some special phone/cable/DSL deal from AT&T, and we've been using it for about 3 months. AT&T even gave us this 2Wire router/modem combo. Recently, I can't seem to get a decent wireless signal in my room. At first I thought Maccy's wireless card was not as powerful as my IBM's, but when I got Thinky back, it was having the same problem. For instance, I get 90% signal strength when I'm in the same room as the router, but as soon as I head to my room, the signal drops to 40% or less, often cutting out.

Thinky never had this problem before, and this all started on Tuesday night for the Mac. I'm thinking I'm probably hitting a lot of interference. I've tried unplugging my cordless phone, but that doesn't seem to help. If that's not the case, it may just be my DSL that has been sucking as of late.

People have been telling me that 2Wire routers are crap and I should buy a new one, but the freakin' thing also acts as my modem, so I'm stuck till we ditch AT&T. I've been trying to get my parents to switch back to cable internet, as the big A's cable service leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully I can get back on cable internet eventually. Then I'll be able to get a decent router and take a hammer to the 2Wire.

Until then I'll just have to begin the process of moving my files. X3

Serious business!

School's out for a week, and I'm camping out tomorrow night for a Wii. Expect, like, an actual journal entry from me sometime over the weekend. X3

Good news, Reggie!

So I had to sign up for classes today. At 7 AM. Good times.

So I manage to sign up for 11 credit hours, and I need one more to be a full-time student. As I try to add an Environmental Engineering course I need for a minor, the system stops me. It turns out a class I have to take next fall is a prerequisite for that Environmental Engineering class.

So after adding and dropping two classes I really don't need, I'm kinda getting frustrated. I need at least one credit, and nothing's offered at the same time as that Environmental Engineering class. Then I remember a conversation [info]artfulreggie and I had last night. See, Reggie was baffled as to why UConn doesn't require engineering majors to take Linear Algebra. I'll admit, knowing Linear Algebra probably would have helped me on my recent Chemical Engineering homework. So I look up Linear Algebra, and lo and behold, it fits right where Environmental Engineering was supposed to be.

Now I have two choices. I can either stick with Linear Algebra, a class I really don't need to graduate, or I can drop Linear Algebra once I get a permission number for the Biodiesel research (and 3 credits, which will give me more than 12 whether I keep LA or not).

And if this sounded like jibberish, sorry for wasting 5 minutes of your life. X3

I may not know much about computer software development, but this is pretty funny.

What makes it even better are the two news reporters totally burning Microsoft after the screw up.

Back to Commissions

I haven't been too successful in finding a job this summer. That traffic-counting job has sorta fallen through, as my uncle doesn't call with jobs anymore. Either there haven't been any jobs in the past two weeks, or he found someone else to accompany him to these jobs and hasn't told me. :\

I've also applied to the new Office Depot that's opening up in a few weeks. I'm pretty much at the "bug them until they hire you" phase. It'd be easier if the store was already open, because then I could go in person. Right now, it's a matter of telephone tag with the manager, calling the store, and hoping someone picks up. Ah well, I have to keep trying, I guess, because this seems like my last shot at a job this summer. D:

So in the meantime, I'm still trying to make some cash by taking commissions. So if you need an LJ icon or a badge or something, lemme know.

Pricing is as follows:
LJ Icons:
Standard: $10
Sample:

Squiggle: $10
Sample:

Animated: $15
Sample:

Conbadges: $15 (click here for sample badges)

I can currently only accept payment via PayPal. If you're interested, drop me a line at rinkutiger[at]gmail[dot]com. Thanks. :)

Thunderous Doom!

New England's famous for its fickle weather. This afternoon, it was nice and everything, then all of a sudden these clouds roll in and we have this horrible thunderstorm for about half an hour. In that time period, we got three inches of rain, plus a ton of wind. It knocked over our bushes, and it was very upsetting. D:

Madness! )

And as if that weren't enough, we got hit by another thunderstorm later tonight. It was actually bad enough to cause a car accident right near my house. I could see it from my bedroom window, actually. I wanted to go out and say that I was washing a dish and I heard a noise, so I put the dish down and came out, but that would have been copyright infringment.

What's worse is it's supposed to be like this all weekend. Suck. :{

So the semester is more or less over, and with a big, mostly empty summer schedule ahead of me, I've decided to start taking commissions.

Basically I'll make LJ icons (either animated or not animated), conbadges (just in time for AC!), and cleaned sketches/inked lineart/colored stuffs. All commissions will be done digitally.

For more info on pricing and other options, click here! )

If you want to commission me, e-mail me at rinkutiger(at)gmail(dot)com. If you have a question, either shoot me an e-mail or post it here. ^^
